President Biden informed in an address prior to signing the executive order that US society is built on open and fair competition and that the transport sector, including the container industry, appears to be lagging behind.
“We have to get back to an economy that grows from the bottom up and the middle out. The executive order I am soon going to be signing, commits the federal government to full enformencement of our antitrust laws. No more tolerance for abusive actions by monopolies,” said Biden, among other things, on the topic of the executive order, which covers 72 initiatives.
At Maersk, Vice President of US Government Relations Doug Morgante emphasizes that alliances have been helpful recently when it comes to creating flexible solutions.
“In addition, we find ourselves in this position as a result of the commoditization of shipping which also leads to volatile markets which is not in the interest of anyone. This lean operating model works when everything functions like clockwork, however, as has been seen, does not where pressure to the supply chain is applied,” he said in a written comment last Friday.
